Stereotactic Radiosurgery

The Medical Center now offers Stereotactic Radiosurgery for the highly precise treatment of brain and spinal tumors. This form of image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) delivers a large radiation dose to a tumor in a single session or a lower dose in multiple sessions. The goal of this non-invasive procedure is to destroy the target without surgery or harming nearby healthy tissue.

Because of the location of a brain tumor and the sensitivity of the surrounding tissue, often times the tumor is inoperable. Stereotactic Radiosurgery shapes a high dose radiation beam around the tumor in order to deliver the radiation to the entire tumor. Because of the precision of the technology, the treatment dose is delivered within one millimeter of the tumor, protecting the surrounding tissue.

Stereotactic Radiosurgery is a non-surgical treatment despite its name and is viewed as a form of "bloodless surgery." The procedure does not remove the tumor. It damages the DNA of the tumor cells, causing them to loss their ability to reproduce.
