Pulmonary Rehabilitation

The Medical Center Pulmonary Rehabilitation services can help individuals with breathing problems improve their quality of life. The program combines exercise conditioning, endurance training, education and emotional support to help individuals control and reduce the symptoms and complications from pulmonary disease and improve their physical capabilities.

Individuals with the following chronic lung diseases can benefit from pulmonary rehabilitation:

  • Asthma
  • Bronchitis
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Emphysema
  • Lung Resection
  • Occupational & Environmental Lung Disease
  • Interstitial Fibrosis

Pulmonary Rehab is available in three phases:

Phase 1: Focuses on education and therapy in breathing techniques while the patient is in the hospital being treated for lung disease.

Phase 2: Focuses on education, therapy and exercise sessions in an outpatient setting. Sessions last approximately 90 minutes are are held two days a week. This phase typically lasts for 24-36 visits. Therapy focuses on:

    • Breathing retraining
    • Reconditioning exercises
    • Stress management
    • Energy conservation
    • Nutritional counseling
    • Smoking cessation (if needed)
    • Medication Therapy

Phase 3: Available for patients who have completed Phase 2. Participation in this wellness program is not limited to a certain number of visits; individuals can participate as long as they like. Focuses on:

    • Maintaining strength and endurance
    • Individual education and counseling
    • Home exercise program
